"The Pleasure of Your Company"
Free Music Series
on Special Sunday Afternoons at 2:30 P.M.
The Scripps Ranch Friends of the Library invites you to attend the "Pleasure of Your Company" series of music concerts, which are presented on selected Sundays at 2:30 pm in the Community Room at the Scripps Miramar Ranch Library Center. The concerts are free (with an occasional, rare exception) and are open to the public. A suggested donation of $5 per person would be gratefully accepted, but is not required. A complimentary reception in the Library courtyard will follow each concert, with an opportunity to meet the performers.
Concertgoers are welcome to park their cars in the parking lots adjacent to the library and are asked to enter the Community Room through the courtyard gate, which is adjacent to the main parking lot on the east side of the Library Center. Patrons are cautioned not to park along red-curbed areas; the police will issue tickets. Offsite, overflow parking is available on Meanley Drive, south of the Library. Sponsorship Opportunities: The "Pleasure of Your Company" music series is supported by concertgoers just like you. Please consider becoming a patron at the $25, $50, $100, or $400 level. The $400 level allows you to sponsor a concert: You will be able to choose the month, have input regarding the performance, and receive star billing in the program. The La Jolla Renaissance Singers: The La Jolla Renaissance Singers will return to present a holiday concert. Since 1963, the La Jolla Renaissance Singers have been bringing the finest of early choral music to the San Diego area. The 25-member group performs vocal music written from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance, with occasional forays into the Romantic and Modern periods. In period costume, the group performs in concert halls, museums, and churches, as well as in libraries, parks, and for private parties. This year they will be performing Benjamin Britten's "Ceremony of Carols," followed by a selection of traditional English and Spanish carols. |

Yuko Maruyama Jazz Trio: Yuko was introduced to American audiences with jazz club concert engagements for the release of her "In Tone Nation," the premiere recording of the new Shigeru Kawai Grand Piano held at several famous jazz venues including Dizzy's in San Diego. Trained in Japan as a classical pianist, Yuko earned a master’s degree in jazz studies from USC where her original composition "Twilight" was on the first CD produced by her department. "Although jazz was born in America it is extremely popular among the Japanese," says Doug Eber, head of the Japanese America Society. In her compositions and performance, she likes to incorporate Latin rhythms, clever harmony and melodic structure, while still maintaining the traditional flavors of jazz. |

Endre Hegedus: Once again the marvelous Hungarian pianist Endre Hegedus will perform a Saturday evening concert at 7PM featuring, among others, the works of Bach, Beethoven, and Chopin. This is not a free concert. Admission is $10 per adult, with children admitted free of charge. |

The MLK Choir: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir San Diego, more commonly known as the MLK Choir, is a volunteer organization of singers from San Diego County and Temecula. Their repertoire includes gospel music, Negro Spirituals, anthems, and some classical works. They have performed in several cities in California and throughout Europe educating audiences on the history and impact of spirituals and gospel music. Proceeds from their concerts and CD sales fund educational grants, awarded to qualifying high school seniors who are pursuing higher education in the visual and performing arts. |

The Allison Adams Tucker Quartet: A multi-lingual vocalist raised in San Diego, Allison Adams Tucker has a passion for world cultures and the communication of music that binds us all. Her album, "Come With Me" was nominated for best jazz album of the year in 2009. The Volante Piano Quartet: The Volante Piano Quartet presents a program of the 20th century music of Russia and America. Singer Maja Markovic sings Russian songs by Rachmaninoff and American songs by Rorem and others. The music of American composer, Amy Beach, will be included. This performance will be accompanied by a mini-lecture of the composers' histories, biographies, and musical styles. Pianist Miho Gary, violinist Philip Tyler, cellist Randy Plate and singer Maja Markovic form the quartet. |

Susan Barrett and Stefani Walens: Susan Barrett and Stefani Walens have been performing for San Diego audiences as an oboe and piano duet for twenty-five years. They will be performing romantic music from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century for this concert. Susan will talk about her life as a professional musician and also describe the challenges of the double reed which the oboist makes to create the oboe tone. |
